Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee's Medicinal Weeds & Leeches!
On Thursday, June 23, starting at 5:30 p.m., join us at Windsor Historical Society for a special program on Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee’s Medicinal “Weeds” and Leeches with master gardener and raconteur Gordon Kenneson. 18th-century Dr. Hezekiah Chaffee’s home on Palisado Green is maintained by Windsor Historical Society as a museum. See the Chaffee House at 5:30 p.m. or browse a selection of herbs and perennials for sale, most offered at prices under $3. At 6 p.m., the Society will hold a brief Annual Meeting. At 6:15, learn from Gordon Kenneson about the apothecary’s profession and the professional stature of apothecaries, barber surgeons, chirurgeons (or surgeons), and physicians in the 18th century. Kenneson will reveal how Dr. Chaffee would have used mint julep, the heavily-scented four o’clock flower, and poisonous hellebore in his practice. He will also speculate about whether Dr. Chaffee would have kept company with known Windsor “weeds women.” The cost for this program is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and free for Windsor Historical Society members.
