Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the CCC camp in Windsor
On Thursday, September 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., the Windsor Historical Society will present “Celebrating the Civilian Conservation Corps: The 90th Anniversary of Camp Britton in Windsor,” a lecture by author and Connecticut Conservation Corps Museum Director Martin Podskoch.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began on March 31, 1933 under President Roosevelt’s New Deal to relieve the poverty and unemployment of the Depression. Several CCC camps were set up in Connecticut, including Camp Britton in Windsor.
Camp Britton opened on September 12, 1935. Affectionately known as “Camp Bug”, it was not your average CCC camp. Beyond the usual forest improvements and park creation, the camp worked in step with the Connecticut Agricultural Station to execute insect control and research.
Podskoch’s talk will explore the origins of the CCC and the camp’s work in the Poquonock section of Windsor. Attendees will learn how Windsor's CCC camp helped advance both environmental stewardship and scientific innovation during a pivotal era in American history.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and WHS members, and $6 for children. Preregistration is encouraged.
